Schloss Oberwerries

Ogham-stone CASTLE.svg

Oberwerries was first mentioned in 1284 in the feudal register of the Counts of Limburg-Styrum, who transferred the fief Oberwerries to the knight Engelbert von Herbern.

Oberwerries Castle consists of various buildings - archway house, manor house, royal stables - which were built over a period of several centuries and grew together to form today's water castle complex, which is well worth seeing.

Oberwerries was first mentioned in 1284 in the feudal register of the Counts of Limburg-Styrum, who transferred the fief Oberwerries to the knight Engelbert von Herbern and his heirs in the same year. The family lived here for 180 years.

In the 18th century, Oberwerries came into the possession of the von Elverfeld family through inheritance. After the death of the last owner, the castle remained uninhabited, fell into disrepair and became a ruin within 160 years.

It was only when the city of Hamm took possession of the castle in 1942 that the reconstruction of the dilapidated castle complex and the conversion of the manor house into a vocational school hostel, today the educational and meeting place of the city of Hamm, began a few years later.
