Today's Renaissance castle was built in 1564 by master builder Laurenz von Brachum. The northeast tower collapsed in 1900 and was replaced by the current one in 1910. The various development phases can be clearly seen here.
The castle became the property of the von Galen family in 1653, who lived here until 2002. In 1997 Bernhard Graf von Galen gave the castle as a gift to the Catholic religious order Servi Jesu et Mariae (SJM). From 2001 to 2016, the castle housed a boys' boarding school. Now it is used as a spiritual center with a varied offer. There are regular public tours and events.
