The border tower on the bank area in the Nieder Neuendorf district is one of the last existing watchtowers of the GDR in the former border section of Berlin.
The border tower on the bank area in the Nieder Neuendorf district is one of the last existing watchtowers of the GDR in the former border section of Berlin. It was built in 1987 as a command post for the border regiment 38 "Clara Zetkin" for 18 other border towers. After the reunification, it was preserved as a contemporary witness and has been open to the public since November 1999.
The exhibition was developed from scratch in 2014 and now conveys multimedia events from the end of the Second World War to the completion of German unity. The structure and everyday life of the GDR border troops as well as the internal surveillance mechanisms are explained using the former border regiment 38 as an example. The exhibition also describes the history of refugees, those wishing to leave and opposition figures from the region. Historical film recordings and a free audio guide make visiting the bilingual exhibition a special experience.
The border memorial stone by the artist Heike Becker has been located next to the border tower since 2009.
