Historical Notes The Abbey of San Cassiano is an ancient Benedictine abbey located near Narni in the province of Temi. The fortified Abbey is located on the steep slopes of Monte Santa Croce, not far from the mouth of the gorge of the Nera Feathers, in a position that dominates the ancient route of the Via Flaminia. The Benedictine Abbey of San Cassiano dates back to the 10th century, at the time of the Narni pope John XIII (965-972) and of Santo Orso, abbot. The Abbey was built on a fortified monastery dating back to the Gothic Wars (6th century); probably it was commissioned by a Byzantine general, Belisario, in analogy to the one dedicated to San Giovenale, built in Orte at the time of the Virgil turnip (558-555).
