This winter, I had the opportunity to experience Vars for myself, and let me tell you, it was an unforgettable journey. I packed my suitcase and headed to the airport, ready to take on the slopes. My excitement was palpable, but as soon as I landed, I was met with a surprise. Renting a car turned out to be a costly affair, with the bill reaching a whopping 600 for just one week. Despite this setback, I was determined to make the most of my trip, and I wasn't disappointed.

Upon arriving at my friend's chalet, I was blown away by its size and beauty. I had my own room with a door that opened to a stunning balcony, offering breathtaking views of the French Alps. As an Irishman, this was a rare and unique experience, and I took my time to fully appreciate it.

However, my adventure was not without its challenges. On the first night, I received some bad news - my beloved dog, Cashew, had fallen ill and had to be taken to the vet. The entire night, I was plagued by worries, unable to sleep properly. Despite this, I was determined to go snowboarding the next day.

Snowboarding is a sport that requires intense focus, and with my mind elsewhere, I struggled to enjoy myself. It wasn't until I received some good news about Cashew that I was able to truly immerse myself in the experience. She was back barking at people outside on the stairs. I never thought that news would make me happy, but in this instance it did.

Once I got news that she was on the mend, I could start to concentrate, but as soon as I found myself facing another challenge – my feet were blistered from the rental snowboarding boots. I realized it was time to invest in my own pair, as this was a recurring issue every time I rented. Despite taking precautions, such as bringing 5 packets of blister plasters, my abnormally large feet were still not protected.

Tuesday brought even more struggles as the pain from my feet combined with a lack of sleep and worries about Cashew, resulted in me having to call it a day on the slopes early. I returned home to find that I was sick and spent the night in bed, recovering from my illness.

But, in the midst of all these struggles, there were also moments of warmth and kindness. My friend checked in on me regularly, bringing me painkillers and plasters, reminding me of the impact of small acts of kindness in times of vulnerability.

By Thursday, I was back on the slopes with my feet protected by special plasters, and my skill level had noticeably improved. I even attempted a red slope and had a blast. Friday was more of the same, with another day of enjoyable snowboarding.

Sadly, Saturday marked the end of my trip as I said goodbye to Vars and headed back to Berlin. Although my journey was filled with challenges, I am grateful for the experiences and memories I've gained from my time in this beautiful snowboarding destination.
